Summer in Swiss Cities!
Lausanne's "Festival de la Cité" 2023
Lausanne, the second largest city on Lake Geneva, combines a dynamic commercial city with the flair of a holiday resort. The capital of the canton of Vaud is also a lively university and congress city. Sport and culture are very important in the Olympic capital. Lausanne's surroundings are extremely picturesque: no wonder the International Olympic Committee has had its headquarters here since 1914. The city is built on three hills surrounded by vineyards, with Lake Geneva at its feet. On the opposite French shore of the lake, the Savoy Alps rise impressively. The attractive old town is largely car-free. Small alleys with cafés and boutiques characterise the streetscape in the medieval town centre. The old town is dominated by the cathedral, which is considered the most impressive early Gothic building in Switzerland.
Throughout the year, many cultural events take place in and around Lausanne. Today we would like to introduce you to the widely known city festival "Festival de la Cité", Tuesday, July 4, 2023 - Sunday, July 9, 2023 – it is free of charge!!
The Association pour la Fête à Lausanne was created in 1968, with the first festival taking place on28 and 29 June 1968. Today, Festival de la Cité Lausanne showcases a unique and diverse range of artistic projects at no cost to the spectator. These include theatre, dance and performance arts, classical music, jazz and contemporary music, shows for young audiences, circus, literature, visual arts and architecture, to name just a few. Festival de la Cité is a contemporary, urban event that interacts with the city, its residents and its visitors.
The festival promotes art in urban space and artistic work on site. More broadly, it aims to foster interaction between the arts, public space and society at large. The festival also aims to anchor the vibrant character of contemporary performing arts at the heart of the city's cultural and natural heritage.
Because the festival is freed from the social, spatial and aesthetic constraints imposed by specific performance spaces like museums or theatres and the associated costs, it helps facilitate access to arts and culture for as many people as possible without any entry fee!
Finally, what makes the festival unique is its ambitious programme and its convivial, unconventional spirit during five summer days and evenings!
