Summer in Swiss Cities!
Zurich
After the Second World War, Switzerland experienced an economic boom while culturally and politically Switzerland remained very conservative. The city of Zurich grew at great speed to become Switzerland's largest economic metropolis. An intense youth movement brought new ideas in the 80s and a rich cultural life to Zurich, including a world-famous opera, well-known theatres and many cultural events of international renown. Since the signing of the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons between Switzerland and the European Union in 1999, the city has become a popular place to live for highly qualified workers, especially in the financial sector, from all over Europe. With about 450’000 citizens and a well organised international airport, Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and is economically and culturally very diverse.
Zurich is well worth a visit in all seasons of the year: in summer, the numerous riverside and lakeside swimming baths are particularly popular, while in winter, many winter sports resorts close to Zurich invite guests to ski or enjoy a winter hike.
Those who travel to Zurich in April can witness the traditional spring festival, “Sechseläuten”; meanwhile, in August, visitors can dance around the lake basin at the incomparable Street Parade. Food lovers come into their own in October, when they have the opportunity to sample the latest wines during a hike in the region around Lake Zurich. Anyone who finds themselves in Zurich in December can experience an enchanting festive season, with numerous Christmas markets, the fairy tale tram, and various wonderful traditions like hours of delicious “Fondue”, the Swiss cheese meal number one!
Every three years the unique festival of festivals!
Every three years there is another cultural highlight which the Zurich population and thousands of guests are awaiting with great excitement: “Züri Fäscht” (Zurich Party). Anyone who misses Switzerland’s largest city festival, the "Züri Fäscht", this year from July 7 – 9, 2023 will have to wait another three whole years before they have the chance again. The first edition of the Züri Fäscht dates back to 1951. The traditional summer festival has been held in its present form since 1976 and has been a permanent fixture in the calendar of events in the city of Zurich since 1991. It is rightly called the "festival of festivals".
During the second weekend in July, over two million visitors take over the streets along the River Limmat and around the lake basin that are otherwise occupied by cars, trams and buses. A giant festival ground with music and food stands serving culinary delights from all over the world, attract people of all ages. Spectacular sights are not just to be found in the inner city, but also in the skies above Zurich – thanks to their magnitude and beauty, the two musical fireworks displays on the Friday and Saturday evenings are among the absolute highlights of this mega-event.
