400-006-7726。 Original English Text Household contents, private liability insurance and building insurance A. Introduction The household contents insurance is not mandatory but highly recommended for all Swiss residents. The private liability insurance is mandatory for all tenants and highly recommended for landlords. The building insurance is mandatory for all landlords and is regulated by each Canton. The biggest insurance companies in Switzerland for this type of insurances are: HelvetiaZurich Insurance GroupSwiss Life B. Household contents Whether there is a water damage, a burglary or a fire in your home, when your household contents are damaged you need to replace them quickly. Household contents insurance covers the loss. In Switzerland, along with the private liability insurance, it is one of the most important forms of insurance. The household contents insurance is not mandatory but highly recommended for all Swiss residents. The price of the premium depends on the size of the apartment/house, the number of people living in, the value of the movable property and the deductible. The premium is payable on a yearly basis. 1. Basic insurance Household contents insurance covers all movable property in your home at replacement value, which means that at the time of the claim, no impairment is applied to take account of age, use or wear and tear. This applies in the event of fire or natural forces, burglary (use of force against objects), robbery (use of force against people), water inside the building or glass breakage. Theft within your home is also insured. Necessary follow-up costs incurred directly in connection with the occurrence of an insured loss are also insured – for example, for cleaning up at the site where the loss occurred or for additional living expenses. Children who are studying away during the week and return home at weekends are covered in full under family insurance. 2. Supplementary insurances In case you want a more extensive coverage, there are supplementary insurances available according to your needs. Each insurance company offers its own supplementary insurances, however we can identify the following supplementary insurances. Household contents all risks: This extension covers your entire household contents for all types of loss or damage. This includes smartphones, bicycles, e-bikes capable of speeds up to 25 km/h, luggage, sports equipment, laptops, etc. Simple theft away from home: Outside your permanent dwelling your household contents are insured against theft not involving the use of violence. Motorized bicycles and e-bikes: Covers damage to motorized bicycles and e-bikes capable of speeds of 25 km/h or faster in the event of damage, destruction, theft and robbery or other loss. Special valuables: The insurance covers valuables with an individual value of up to CHF 20,000. The value at the time when the contract is taken out is the decisive factor. Warranty extension: Warranties on all electronic devices in the home can be extended by three years from the expiry of the manufacturers warranty. The insurance covers devices with a minimum value of CHF 300. Cyber: Cyber cover insures you against damage arising from use of the Internet. Examples include credit card misuse and identity theft, as well as online shopping, etc. Pet insurance: The insurance covers veterinary treatment for pets (dogs, cats, horses and other pets). Earthquake: Your household contents are insured against earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Area around the building: You can include the area around your building (plants, summerhouses, swimming pool) in your household contents as a supplement. 3. Private liability insurance Private liability insurance covers you for any damage you cause to other people or their property. It is one of the most important types of insurance, as even small lapses of attention can have major financial consequences. Tenants in particular can easily cause damage to someone elses property – for example by cracking a washbasin or making a dent in a parquet floor. The insurance covers you for damage/injuries caused by you to persons and property, as well as for any resulting financial losses. In addition, the insurance reimburses costs incurred in mounting a defence against unjustified third-party claims. If you live in a domestic partnership, cover can be extended to include all persons permanently living in the same household as you. Children living away from home are also covered as long as they are registered at home. 4. Building insurance 1) Mandatory insurance All buildings located on the territory of the canton of Neuchâtel are compulsorily insured against fire and natural elements by ECAP (Cantonal insurance and prevention institution). What is insured? 2) Supplementary insurance Your home is usually the biggest investment you will make in your life. As the owner you have to bear all the financial risks. Therefore, you can contract a supplementary insurance to get a better coverage. Building property insurance covers risks not included in the compulsory building insurance of your canton. Each insurance company proposes its own building insurance. Here an example of the coverage: The entire property, i.e. the land, the building and its components as well as the surrounding areaObjects, equipment and materials that are firmly attached to the building Your building is insured at its reinstatement value. That means, if it is damaged, the insurance will reimburse the cost of constructing a building of the same type. The insurance covers, for example, doors, heating systems, solar installations, toilets and built-in cupboards. On the other hand, moveable furnishings and household contents are not covered. In most of the cases, the following risks are insured: Natural forces such as high water and flooding, storms, hail, avalanches, snow pressure, rockfall and landslides Fire, smoke and fire-fighting water, e.g. a...
