 "Les Halles"

Team Building Event – Neuchâtel Office II

Just beyond the harbor, our guide introduced Marthe Robert, the first woman to swim across Lake Neuchatel in 1904, to us. During the race, the waves on the lake were so huge that other male participants turned back halfway, but she persevered and finished the race. Until the 1920s, she remained one of the few women to compete against men in swimming tournaments. Now, there are annual events and competitions held in Neuchatel to honor this courageous woman who broke barriers. It is held during the month of July to pay homage to Marthe Robert. The swimmers can complete the 7km crossing either individually or in teams of two and threes. The day is mainly one of festivities and fun to celebrate a historic landmark set by a remarkable woman.

The Museum of Art and History is located just a stones throw away from the lake. Among all the extensive and rich collections it has, three puppets created by a notable watchmaker Pierre Jaquet-Droz in the late 18th century are the most famous. Their uniqueness lies in the programming system similar to the one we can find in a watch. The writer” sits on a small stool and can write 40-character text with three lines with a quill on a mahogany table. The draftsman” draws by moving the hand on a fixed piece of paper, and the musician” presses the keyboard on the organ. Some say that because of their mechanism, they were the first version of the computer.

After the museum, we walked to where the English gardens used to be. English gardens were an attempt to blend romantic elements into the natural landscape while growing a little on the wild side. Romantic elements were introduced in the 18th Century and included ponds or small lakes, bridges or long docks on the water, imitation ruins, and sculptures. Each of the romantic elements in an English-style garden is incorporated into the foliage to enhance the wild look of the garden.

Passing by the Hotel du Peyrou, an 18th-century palace with a French garden, we, unfortunately, werent able to witness the beautiful garden as it was under renovation. However, at the time it was built, the manors gardens stretched all the way from the estate down to Lake Neuchâtel. French gardens are also called formal gardens and are exactly that; formal. They follow very strict geometric lines. Plants are arranged so that they maintain the geometric and symmetric layouts. They are trimmed and pruned on a regular basis to keep them from obtaining that overgrown look, typical of an English-style garden. In larger gardens, lanes or paths branch off from the center, which, according to tradition, is a building façade going outward so visitors can stroll through each section. Lanes are often paved with gravel. French gardens traditionally include lawns for large scale gardens.

After visiting the beautiful palace, we walked to certain local authorities buildings where, 2 centuries ago, it used to be a hospital. It was built by David de Pury, who convinced some of his wealthy friends, for the people who didnt have the means to be taken care of at their own home. At that time, those who could afford it, received home care by doctors and nurses. The building now is now used by administrative offices from Neuchâtel.

We kept walking along the street where we saw and entered into the impressive Hôtel de Ville. The Hôtel de Ville, funded by David de Pury and built according to the plans of Pierre-Adrien Pâris, an architect of the court of Louis XVI, made a strong impression on the population of Neuchâtel, which numbered 4,000 inhabitants at that time. Nearly 230 years later, the Neuchâtel City Hall is still standing and in use. It houses the executive and legislative authorities, and civil marriages are celebrated there. This building was also the first one to be built by the wealth of David de Pury. He unfortunately was never able to see it completed as he passed away during its construction.

From then on we walked to through a small street called the Rue du Neubourg. This street, before it was renovated, was one of the dirtiest and ugliest in town. However, recently they renovated it in way that depicts the history of Neuchâtel. This is a 240 square meter mural that tells, from one wall to the other, the close ties Neuchâtel has with history, literature and tales and legends. It also shows the times that Neuchâtel featured in certain quotes by famous writers who came or were connected to Neuchâtel in different ways. This magical work was inspired by the famous illustrator John Howe who is best known for his work as conceptual designers The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

The first picture on the left shows the absinth fairy, also known as Mélusine. She is very famous around town as absinth is a very popular drink in Neuchâtel as it originated from this area. On the left we can see a painting of the beautiful Creux du Van” which is actually an impressive mountain above Neuchâtel. These are two paintings that significantly represent the identity of Neuchâtel.

Finally we walked down the street to visit other landmark buildings in Neuchâtel. One of them was a bakery which, around 200 years ago, housed a common oven. Due to the risk of fire being so high and the numerous accidents of the time, this used to be the only place where people could bake their bread. At the time wooden buildings in the city burned a few times. So to avoid these problems, a common oven was built. Families used to prepare their bread at home and went to the common oven to bake it. On the other side of the street is the Brasserie du Cardinal. The restaurant in the heart of Neuchâtel is a little gem and its Art Nouveau décor makes it a rare find in Switzerland. While there has been a restaurant on this site since 1902, the house was originally built in the 18th century. Le Cardinal is the only vestige” left of the belle epoque. If any of our visitors or families are lucky enough to join us on this tour, you will find a little surprise waiting for you at the fountain which is right next to the restaurant.

We finished our tour by walking by the confectionary Suchard and the Restaurant Les Halles. Phillip Suchard was a Swiss chocolatier and industrialist. He traveled around the world and brought a lot of his traveling back to Neuchâtel but it was thanks to his son-in-law that his business became what it was. This confectionery, founded in 1825 by Philippe Suchard, is one of the oldest in Switzerland and the oldest business in Neuchâtel. In 1990 the company was absorbed by Kraft Foods. We were lucky and received a little bag to taste this delicious chocolate.

The Restaurant Les Halles” built-in 1569 was in the Middle Ages a market hall dedicated to trading and negotiation. On the bottom floor is the café & restaurant and on the top floor is the banquet room. It is now classified as a historical monument.

Thanks to this tour we were able to develop our knowledge on the history of the City during this period that shaped the way it looks now. Even the 3 Neuchâtelois” learned a lot of new things thanks to the in-depth knowledge of our tour guide.

Other guided tours are also available on different historical periods of the city including a treasure hunt for kids. These great tours developed by the Neuchâtel tourism office are warmly animating the city thanks to the many tourists coming from all around Switzerland and the EU to spend their summer in this city.

Thanks to this wonderful tour, La Soleille Team will be able to do the tour in Chinese for our visitors but also for the families relocating here.

It was a great team-building event that we all enjoyed. Thank you La Soleille Family Office.
