Activities to do during winter in Switzerland
Winter is one of the best times to visit Switzerland. While summer offers beautiful flowering valleys and great hiking trails, autumn with the golden scenery, winter brings on the magic of snow-covered peaks, charming Christmas markets, and the best skiing experience you'll find in Europe.
There are plenty of things to do in Switzerland for non-skiers, too. The snow fun continues off the pistes, with trails for snowshoeing, ice-skating on frozen lakes, and great dining and shopping when you're ready for a break from the cold weather. Plus, unless you're staying at a ski resort, winter means smaller crowds at the most popular attractions and much better prices for flights and accommodations – a big plus in one of Europe's most expensive countries.
Need some inspiration? Plan your trip with our list of the top things to do in winter in Switzerland.
Christmas markets
Mulled wine, Christmas music, twinkling lights and enticing aromas – nothing could be more special than enjoying the magical run-up to Christmas with your nearest and dearest at one of the many Christmas markets.
Basel
From 25th November to 23rd December 2021
Did you know that Basel has been voted the most beautiful Christmas market in Europe? This pedestrianized city is a perfect destination for families.
The Basel Christmas market has been voted the winner of the European Best Christmas Markets. Basel will therefore host the most popular Christmas market in Europe in 2021.
Basel has a deep-rooted tradition as Switzerland’s most beautiful and largest Christmas city and is well worth a visit every year. Not only the well-preserved Old Town is radiant in the warm Christmas light, but the shops and the facades of many buildings glitter with a golden glow. Hundreds of tall pine trees border the streets and stand brightly lit. The Basel Christmas Market can be found on Barfüsserplatz, and on Münsterplatz – one of the most beautiful squares in Basel.
A magnificent Christmas tree stands on Münsterplatz, with ornaments by the well-known decorator Johann Wanner.
Around 130 traders and artisans offer their goods for sale in small, rustic wooden chalets. Anyone still looking for gift ideas can seek inspiration in the wide selection and enchanting ambience. The market is enriched by numerous events.
Zurich
Sechseläutenplatz market

Whether at Zurich’s oldest Christmas market in the picturesque Old Town, Christmas village on Sechseläutenplatz near Bellevue, or at the Christkindlimarkt at Zurich Main Train Station: In Zurich, there is a Christmas market to suit each and every taste. A huge choice of gifts and gift ideas enchants visitors to the beautifully decorated market stands.
During a stroll through the Christmas market, there is also plenty of opportunity to warm up with a glass of punch (for the children) or mulled wine (for the adults), or a hot bite to eat, such as raclette or fondue.
Christkindli markt
From 25th November to 24th December 2021
the main station in Zürich lights up to welcome the largest indoors Christmas market in Europe. Among the various Christmas markets in Zürich, this is the most central. Featuring 140 stalls it is one of the largest indoor Christmas markets in Europe. The scent of mulled wine and cinnamon make people skip their connecting trains to stroll around the stalls under the spectacular Christmas tree decorated with thousands of Swarovski crystals. It's a feast for the eyes.
Lausanne
Bô Noël
From 18th November to 31st December 2021
You can get in the Christmas spirit thanks to Lausanne Bô Noël, the locals’ top meeting point at Christmas time. There are awesome events happening during Bô Noël, which is so much more than a Christmas market: don't miss the Lausanne Light Festival (24 November - 24 December).
Take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the city and either choose the Apéro or Fondue mode, dance your heart out at the New Year's Silent Disco, look for unique handmade gifts at Marché des créateurs – Pépinet or check out the Vaud igloo at Marché du terroir de l’Europe. For kids there’s plenty of fun things to do: enjoy the Ferris Wheel in Place Centrale and the animal farm, storytelling yurt and pony rides around the Cathedral – all in the City Children’s Village.
Montreux
Christmas market
From 19th November to 24th December 2021
The Montreux Christmas market is probably one of the most famous Christmas market in Switzerland. It offers a traditional festive experience on the lakeside promenade of Montreux with a magnificent view on the Alps beyond the lake.
Classified as one of the most beautiful in Europe, the Montreux Christmas market brings each year an extra touch of magic under the palm trees of the Riviera. For a month, the lake shores welcome more than 170 merchants, craftsmen and restaurant owners installed in illuminated chalets. An enchantment for young and old, especially when Santa Claus flies over the area in his sleigh (every day at 5, 6 and 7 pm, as well as at 4 pm on Saturdays)!
Skiing in Switzerland
There are so many options for skiers and snowboarders in Switzerland, so it can be hard to know where to begin.
Now that ski season has officially begun, it's time to think about where you want to hit the slopes this season. Whether you plan to go out with friends or with your family, there are plenty of options in Switzerland. Here are a couple of our suggestions.
Les portes du soleil
Les Portes du Soleil ski area offers a unique diversity of landscapes. There are 600 kilometres of slopes, served by 197 ski lifts and 400 km2 of snow-covered playground. If you ski 5 to 6 hours per day, you will need several days to discover the entire ski area: can you believe it?
This French-Swiss area is the perfect place to learn how to ski but is also a real playground for ski enthusiasts. The Portes du Soleil ski area abolishes the borders between valleys and countries, connecting twelve French and Swiss resorts.
Grindelwald – Jungfrau
The winter paradise of the Jungfrau Ski Region
Once arrived and already under its spell: the Jungfrau Ski Region. Here, the ski resorts in the Bernese Oberland come together to form a unique winter paradise for all snow fans. In the Jungfrau ski region there is something for every skier and snowboarder. The entire Jungfrau Ski Region is located at an altitude of up to 2,970 meters and extends over more than 275 kilometers of pistes.
Adventurous winter sports enthusiasts can let off steam in the Jungfrau Ski Region on gentle powder slopes as well as on steep pistes and in numerous snow and fun parks. For the adrenaline junkies among us: some ski areas in the Jungfrau Ski Region even have race tracks and skicross parks.
Verbier
Verbier has developed into a glamorous winter playground for anyone who wants to splash the cash. There is no doubt it's an exclusive resort but with its superb skiing, international clientele, high-quality accommodation and phenomenal bars and restaurants, it's most certainly worth it.
With its sunny slopes, devastating scenery, exciting skiing and lively après ski, Verbier, is rightly acclaimed as one of the must-visit resorts in the world.
There are 410 kilometers of slopes. Verbier suits both the keen skier, with its amazing and easily accessible off-piste, and the more leisurely skier who enjoys cruising the blues before relaxing on a sun lounger for the afternoon. It's also the perfect spot for the après-ski enthusiast, with a world-famous selection of lively bars and clubs.
Ice skating on natural rinks
You'll find plenty of ice-skating rinks in Swiss cities, but the true experience here is to jump on a natural rink. Surrounded by forests, deep inside valleys, natural rinks are everywhere in Switzerland.
In the Jura area of Switzerland, a number of lakes freeze over in winter, transforming into giant ice rinks. Lac de Joux, sitting at an altitude of 1,004 meters, is a stunning icy display. The Lac des Tailleres in La Brevine area is also a popular destination.
For those keeping their trip urban, Katzensee Lake just outside Zurich also attracts ice-skaters during winter.
Scenic train rides in Switzerland
The Bernina Express
The Bernina Express will take you through the Bernina Pass and the Albula Pass, a railway journey that has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Alpine landscapes line the journey as the train passes under 55 tunnels and over a staggering 196 bridges along the way.
You'll see stunning variations in the landscape, from high alpine scenery on different Pass to a Mediterranean atmosphere in the Poschiavo valley just before Tirano. You can enjoy palm trees and snow within a couple of hours.
The Glacier Express
the Glacier Express route between Zermatt and St. Moritz. The eight-hour-long ride takes you through the snow-covered Alps and over 291 bridges, as well as glacier lakes, and narrow valleys that seem to go on forever. It's one of the most stunning ways to enjoy the winter scenery while sipping a cup of hot chocolate.
The Glacier Express is known as the “Slowest Express Train in the World” and arguably the most scenic. Much of the train's spectacular journey passes through the same World Heritage Site as the Bernina Express.
The Jungfrau railway to Jungfrau mountain
A trip up to Jungfraujoch is one of the most popular things to do in the Bernese Oberland. Stand on one of the highest points in the Swiss Alps, walk through an ice cave and get panoramic views over the Alps.
45 minutes it’s all it takes to reach Europe’s highest railway station from Grindelwald terminal.
The Jungfrau-Aletsch Glacier belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s Europe longest glacier. From the terrace you can enjoy a magnificent view of the glacier in the Alps.
Tour through ice tunnels within the ice palace.
Thermal Baths
Thermal spas have a long history in Switzerland, and for centuries even royals enjoyed the mineral-rich, healing waters from the local springs. Whether at a small, cozy wellness center or an exclusive health resort, the experience of relaxing in a 40-degree outdoor pool while snowflakes fall on your face is a must-try while in Switzerland.
Mineralbad & Spa Rigi Kaltbad
One of the most famous thermal baths in Switzerland is the Mineralbad & Spa Rigi Kaltbad, which overlooks Lake Lucerne from the top of Mt. Rigi. There are indoor and outdoor pool options here, plus herbal steam baths and an outdoor lounging area.
Les Bains de Lavey
For those who haven't got a whole day to spare, there are many spas that open late into the evening. There is something quite special about being able to swim under stars surrounded by the outline of the Alps. One such place is Les Bains de Lavey where you can swim or soak till your heart's content until 21:00 during the week and until 22:00 Fridays & Saturdays.
These baths in Valais are one of the closest to Lausanne and Geneva.
The Bains de Lavey have some of the warmest thermal waters in the country.
7132 Vals Thermalbads
7132 is the very definition of special and exquisite. It is definitely among the best-known and beloved thermal baths in Switzerland. With its stunning architecture and amazing landscapes, the waters of the facilities have been well visited for the past hundreds of years. It's important that you book in advance, as the spa can only accommodate a limited number of guests per day.
